Caring for Our Crew
Caring for Our Crew
We are deeply committed to initiatives that keep our seafarers healthy, supported, and thriving. Life at sea can be demanding, but with the right care, strong team spirit, and reliable internet access to stay connected with loved ones, it becomes an enriching and fulfilling experience.
We go far beyond the essentials—providing comprehensive family medical coverage, dedicated mental‑health and wellness programs, life insurance, nutritious meals, and meaningful financial benefits, including a competitive long‑term savings plan. And this is only the beginning of the support we aim to offer.
Working with Mayfair and the Integrity Cell of Robus Insurance, Optimum provides seafarers and their families with tailored health & medical coverage, plus life insurance for the seafarer.
Psychologists are available 24/7 to give support and one-to-one conversations prior to and after joining the vessel. There is easy access to these services on-board all our vessels.
We offer a voluntary long-term savings program for all Optimum crew, providing financial wellbeing through access to a beneficial investment program for medium to long-term life events such as marriage, land/house purchase, children’s education, or retirement. The vessel owner will match the seafarer’s contributions, up to 3% of their salary.
All of our galley staff are trained by our partner, Oceanic, on various health-related areas, including nutrition, international culinary skills, and menu planning based on the WHO’s dietary guidelines.
The optional ShipMoney digital cards are a safe alternative to cash advance, usable anytime to withdraw money from ATMs, to send money to family, recharge mobile phones, etc.
All Optimum Seafarers have complementary internet access with the new high-speed, global Starlink Satellite Network while onboard.
Optimum Seafarers have complementary airport lounge access during international journeys that incur layovers exceeding three hours.
Optimum is proud to ensure that its seafarers are represented through the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), a global organization dedicated to safeguarding the rights, safety, and well being of transport workers. Through the ITF, our crew benefits from advocacy on crucial matters such as job security, fair employment practices, and safe working conditions across the maritime sector.
We also place strong emphasis on upholding the standards established by the International Labour Organization (ILO). These internationally recognized guidelines protect fundamental worker rights, promote equitable labor conditions, reinforce social protections, and support meaningful dialogue on maritime workforce issues.
At Optimum, we proudly champion gender diversity and the advancement of women at sea.
Our commitment extends far beyond recruitment, we actively work to ensure equal opportunities and continuously enhance the onboard experience for women. This includes reviewing PPE and medical supplies across our fleet to meet women’s specific needs and holding regular crew briefings that promote a culture of respect, inclusion, and professionalism.
Through our collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), we further encourage women to pursue maritime careers by supporting dedicated female cadet pathways and initiatives designed to inspire and develop the next generation of women leaders in our industry.
At Optimum, we believe a thriving crew starts with strong physical and mental well‑being. Life at sea brings unique challenges, so we work to create an environment where seafarers feel supported and cared for. We’ve improved onboard facilities and strengthened support systems to help maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. Professional assistance is always accessible through an on‑call Ombudsman, Psychologist, and Welfare Consultant.
Daily life onboard is enhanced with recreational areas offering table tennis, video games, board games, and, on some vessels, basketball courts. Free public computers with Wi‑Fi keep crew connected to loved ones, and when possible, we also support family visits and sailing opportunities to maintain strong personal ties.
